The Accra branch of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) of the Cocoa Marketing Company (Gh) LTD has made a donation worth one thousand Ghana Cedis to porters, also known in local parlance as "kayayei" who ply their trade at the Accra Central business area, near the Cocoa House.

The items were made up of used clothing, shoes, biscuits, assorted soft drinks, sanitary towels, mosquito nets, tooth brush, tooth paste and assorted cocoa products.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Isaac Dwamena Affum, President of the CMC NASPA revealed that the whole caboodle was made possible through the voluntary contributions of members of the Association, supported by a few staff of CMC, as they were touched by the plight of the porters.

He added that the CMC NASPA see their gesture as part of their Corporate social responsibility to society, noting that "it is also to adhere to the Biblical edict that the poor and the underprivileged in society should be helped"

Mr. Affum concluded that albeit they ( the service personnel) are not too financially resourceful, they still consider themselves as  patricians  and see the porters as the plebeians, hence the donation.
