                                 Story; Joe Obeng Yeboah

The Cocoa Marketing Company (Gh) Ltd has joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2022 global annual safety and health day across its operational areas of Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Takoradi.

The theme for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) sanctioned celebration was, "Act Together To Build A Positive Safety And Health Culture" and was aimed at promoting social dialogue among governments, employers, health and safety practitioners and workers as a vehicle to prevent occupational accidents and diseases in the workplace.

Led by the Health and Safety Unit of the Special Services Department of the Company, Accra and the Tema branches organised a lecture for first year students at the Chemu Senior High School in Tema on the topic, " Nurturing Young Minds".

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Jonathan Mensah, a health and safety Consultant noted that when young minds (the youth) are educated on the dangers in living unsafe lives and the many benefits that safe living produces, they grow with it and the whole world will practice safe living, adding the acronym, ABC ( Always Be Careful).

He mentioned loosely hanging and uninsulated electrical cables, eating and singing at the same time, taking two steps at a time, the use of  unprescribed drugs, expensive jokes, talking on phone while crossing  roads, leaving iron in sockets that are plugged on as some of the unsafe acts in both the homes and workplaces and urged the students to keep away from such cultures, since they all have the potential of contributing to accidents and incidents.

''Nurture your minds for safety and health culture'', he added.

Mr. Mensah noted that safety culture is a shared responsibility, advising that all should play their part to make our workplaces and homes areas of good health and safety.

" Do not make today's discussion an ordinary one, let it bring positive changes in your safety culture'', he concluded.

Madam Dorine Fanny Amartey, the Human Resource Manager of the Cocoa Marketing Company (Gh) Ltd on her part ,bemoaned the rate at which most of the youth are flippant, when safety issues are mentioned.

''Safety is a shared responsibility, but I am so afraid for the youth of today''.

She encouraged the students to study hard, sit for their examination, pass, and get catapulted to continue their further studies at the university.

Madam Dorine added that it is the personal responsibility of the students to keep personal hygiene, keep safe and avoid unsafe acts which could harm them.

'' You are the future leaders, we do not want to lose you to unsafe acts''.

The Headmistress of the Chemu Senior High School,  Madam Vicential Kyireh Anin-Adjei was full of praise to the Cocoa Marketing Company (Gh) Ltd for organising the lecture in the school.

'' We are greatly grateful for your choice of Chemu Senior High for this programme, God bless you.

The Kumasi and Takoradi lectures were held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School and the Saint Mary's Senior High School.
