CMC diversifies export markets to boost Ghana’s cocoa trade

The Managing Director of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey, has revealed bold plans to expand Ghana’s cocoa exports beyond Europe by venturing into emerging markets across Asia and North America.

Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, on October 8,2025. Dr. Dogbey explained that relying heavily on Europe exposes Ghana to market risks and limits opportunities for growth. He stated that “We are pursuing diversification strategies to spread our risk and tap into new markets. Asia is an exciting growth area, with countries like Japan already producing their finest chocolates from Ghanaian cocoa”.

Currently, 70 percent of Ghana’s cocoa beans are exported to European countries. However, Dr. Dogbey says the company is now pursuing new trade partnerships in countries such as Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, and Canada as part of a strategic diversification agenda.

He emphasized that CMC’s diversification drive aligns with government’s goal of maximizing foreign exchange earnings and promoting value addition within the cocoa sector. The company is also working closely with COCOBOD to strengthen Ghana’s position as a supplier of traceable, premium-grade cocoa that meets international sustainability and deforestation-free standards.

“Ghana’s cocoa continues to stand out globally for its quality and traceability. Expanding to new regions will ensure stable demand and protect our farmers from fluctuations in traditional markets,” Dr. Dogbey said.

As part of the broader transformation plan, CMC is also exploring semi-finished cocoa exports to capture higher value from processing, while positioning Ghana as a leading player in the global chocolate value chain.

Dr. Dogbey reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring that every new market opportunity translates into better prices and improved livelihoods for Ghana’s cocoa farmers. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure that when CMC grows, our farmers grow with us,” he said.
